E3 2015: Runbow will add online multiplayer and Adventure mode; demo up for one week

lundi 15 juin 2015

Prior to all of the pre-E3 madness that went down this morning, the folks at 13AM Games made an announcement for their upcoming racing brawler Runbow. An unmistakable concern that Shacknews had went hands-on with the game in the past was rounding up eight other players for nine-player multiplayer. Fortunately, that looks to have been address, as Runbow will now feature online multiplayer at launch.

As for the present, Runbow now has a downloadable demo right now on the Wii U eShop. This will give users an opportunity to try out the colorfully competitive romp for themselves. The demo is only available for download until June 22. As an extra incentive, those that download the demo can then pick up the final version of Runbow for 15 percent off when it releases later this year.

Finally, a new single-player Adventure mode was unveiled. To see what that looks like, check out the trailer below.

E3 2015: Rise of the Tomb Raider chills out on November 10

Tomb Raider surprised everyone when it was revealed as a reboot, going on to outsell the entire franchise months after its release. Gamers everywhere were excited to hear Crystal Dynamics was working on a new Tomb Raider title, called Rise of the Tomb Raider, although many were left scratching their heads when Microsoft revealed it would be a timed exclusive to the Xbox One. Microsoft released a new trailer just a few weeks prior to the start of E3 2015, and today, it has more of the game to show off during its press conference.

The demo started with Lara Croft lighting a flare and exploring a dark cave before wandering out into a blizzard. The explorer then braved the treacherous conditions, trudging through the deep snow and navigating unstable ledges before climbing up an icy wall. As she reached the top, the cliff became unstable and knocked her off. As she gathered her bearings, it was then time to outrun an incoming avalanche.

The big news came after the demo, with Crystal Dynamics revealing that Rise of the Tomb Raider would release on November 10.

Rock Band 4 rocks out in October with Freestyle Guitar Solos

When I went hands-on with Rock Band 4 a few weeks ago, everything about Harmonix's return to the music genre felt refreshingly familiar. The plastic guitar still felt natural in my hands, the strum bar still felt smooth as I strummed it to the beat, and the friendly atmosphere of playing with others was still intact. Yes, just about everything felt the same, even with new mechanics for vocals and drums.

So when it came time for my thrashing guitar solo, imagine my surprise when I saw the highway change to include patterns that I had never seen before. There were no notes on-screen, but there were changing highway patterns. By instinct, I started hitting buttons and by the end, I had been judged to have a "Sloppy Solo." What was this that I had just seen?

That was the new Freestyle Guitar Solo mechanic, one of the biggest changes to Rock Band 4. During traditional guitar solos for given songs, a new set of cues and prompts will pop up, allowing users to earn high scores and sound good in the process. The different freestyle sections (each distinct by their highway pattern) will prompt players for single notes, licks, finger tapping, and noise. The idea is to allow for freedom of expression and come up with creative solos, since each section will work with any of the guitar's fret buttons. Different fret buttons will play different notes, creating possibilities for different-sounding solos.

During my time with the game, Freestyle Guitar Solos were far from intuitive. While I need some practice in this area, I won't lie that I missed the old system. Fortunately, Harmonix is not forcing this change. Those that like their solos the old-fashioned way have the option to toggle them on and off by using the D-pad on the guitar controller. In fact, songs that have more than one solo will allow players to use both solo systems.

Along with the unveiling of the new freestyle system, Harmonix is revealing five more songs.

  • Benjamin Booker - "Violent Shiver"
  • Elvis Presley - "Suspicious Minds"
  • Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars - "Uptown Funk"
  • Queens of the Stone Age - "My God is the Sun"
  • Scandal - "The Warrior"

The time to rock is almost here. Harmonix is bringing Rock Band 4 to E3 2015 and the development has also brought a release date announcement with them. Look for Rock Band 4 to hit Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on Rocktober October 6.

Microsoft has been steadily releasing new information regarding 343 Industries’ upcoming Halo 5: Guardians over the past couple of months. We already know the upcoming Halo title will feature two stories and will possibly have a role reversal at some point in its narrative, and today, we’re learning more about Halo 5: Guardians from Microsoft’s E3 press conference.

343 Industries took the stage to show a live demo of Halo 5: Guardians as we watch a piece of its story from the perspective of Locke. In the demo, we see Locke and his group are searching for Master Chief to find his assault rifle was left behind. During their search, they're attacked by Covenant forces, many of which appear to be new to the Halo series. As they continue their search, Locke is captured by an enemy Covenant saying Master Chief is welcome, but Locke and his group, are not.

Halo 5: Guardians will offer seamless drop-in / drop-out co-op play and a new 24-player multiplayer mode called Warzone. Warzone has two squads fighting against one another: one squad is lead by Master Chief, the other is lead by Spartan Locke. Each squad is fighting the other as well as AI-controlled enemies in a huge battle that may be the most ambitious game mode ever conceived for the Halo series.

E3 2015: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2016

The sequel to Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare was teased by EA last week by way of a short trailer that had no visuals, only sounds. The audio cues we heard sounded exactly what we’ve experienced in the original third-person shooter, and considering EA already revealed a new Plants vs. Zombies game was expected this holiday season, today’s announcement of a new Garden Warfare game doesn’t come as a big surprise to many.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 marks the first time in the Plants vs. Zombies franchise where the plants are on the offensive as the zombies were successful in their takeover of Suburbia. Both plants and zombies have enlisted new characters from the past, present, and future to join their fight. Players will experience a number of new modes, discover unique gameplay features, and battle through all-new maps.

Some of the new game modes includes a 24-player Herbal Assault mode, which allows players to go on the offensive as the plants and a 4-player co-op mode called Graveyard Ops that has zombies coming together to defend against plants. Players will be able to play multiplayer games with or against friends or play Garden Warfare 2’s unique solo experience by fighting against AI opponents and allies, or bring a friend along in local split-screen co-op.

Garden Warfare 2 will introduce a total of six new character classes and will offer a total of 100 playable character variants. Those who played Garden Warfare will be able to transfer almost every one of their unlocked characters into Garden Warfare 2.

A total of 12 new maps will be available in Garden Warfare 2 that spans from a number of iconic locations within the Plants vs. Zombies universe, including a Time Travel Theme Park to the final frontiet.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 will launch in spring 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

E3 2015: 5 Surprising Details about Fallout 4

Bethesda finally took the wraps off of Fallout 4 tonight, making it the centerpiece of an already ambitious stage show. And it did so with some pinache, illustrating why this Fallout game took full advantage of its six-year development time. Here are some of the details that surprised us the most about this next journey into the wastes.

The World Before the Bomb

We at Shacknews correctly predicted that the hero will have a connection to the pre-bomb era, even if we were a little off on the details. What we didn't predict was that the game would actually start in an idyllic pre-apocalypse era, putting you in the shoes of a wanderer just minutes before bombs start dropping. Through some circumstance, your new parent character finds his or her way into a vault, and wakes up 200 years later, the apparent sole survivor of Vault 111.

Bethesda was careful to tiptoe around story details, but we get the feeling your family may not be entirely dead and buried. After all, your child is supposed to take visual traits from both the mother and father, so perhaps your baby survived too. Maybe the story centers on finding your long lost family, or even locating descendents and relatives.

Customize Everything

Fallout has always been known for its expansive options, but those have usually centered around story and world-building. This iteration looks to take that a step further, by adding a healthy dose of Minecraft. It will let you build your own settlement, complete with defenses to ward off raiding parties, and it will gradually start to attract traders who can get you the best goods.

Not only that, but the bucketloads of useless junk you acquire in Fallout and Elder Scrolls games can finally be put to good use, by breaking it down to make weapon mods or even craft entirely new weapons. We saw a wealth of varieties presented rapid-fire. Finally, if customizing your town and weapons weren't enough, how about your own suit of armor? Those same tools can be applied to the series' iconic power armor, and we even saw it being used with rocket boosts in a short clip of a combat sequence.

Fallout Shelter

Companion games are a dime a dozen these days, and most of them aren't worth much but some wasted time. Fallout Shelter actually looks shockingly fun, as it puts you in charge of your own Vault and tasks you with keeping the denizens happy and healthy. You can even send them out on raids for precious supplies. It's free-to-play, but the presentation assured that there are no countdown timers or similarly-reviled F2P gimmicks.

The most surprising part, though? That it released right after the conference ended, giving players hungry to dive back into the wastes the opportunity to do it immediately. It's only on iOS so far, but an Android version is incoming.

A Real Pip-Boy

The Pip-Boy may be just as iconic as the Vault or Power Armor to Fallout fans. The wrist-mounted personal computer serves as your menu, item organization, and music player all in one. For Fallout 4, Bethesda has decided to give fans a real crack at a Pip Boy, offering a Collector's Edition that includes a replica. It can slot in a smart phone with its own dedicated second-screen app, letting you check your stats on the fly in real life. It even presumably includes the "game tapes" with Fallout universe versions of games like Donkey Kong and Missile Command.

Silly? Yes. But Todd Howard may have summed it up best: "I find second-screen experiences--they're usually just stupid gimmicks. But as far as stupid gimmicks go, it's just the best f-ing one."

Oh, That Release Date

We had heard rumblings and rumors of a release date that was to come sooner than we might have expected, but given that this was Fallout 4's first real public showing, those seemed unlikely. Just like Fallout Shelter, though, we learned that Fallout 4 is closer than we might have realized. It's coming November 10, 2015. That's alarmingly soon, so practice up on your duck-and-cover.

E3 2015: The best of the Into the Pixel collection

For visitors of E3 2015, there's always something new to glance at every year. In particular, before the show even opens its doors, the hallway area between the South and West Halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center is the annual home for the Into the Pixel collection. This is an art exhibit with some of the most beautiful works of art based on video games, with new works presented at each E3.

Before the latest round of art is presented this Tuesday, Shacknews is highlighting a few items of interest, as well as hearing from the artists that put them together.

Battleborn - "Rendain" by Herman Ng

"This is concept art for Rendain, the villain in Battleborn. It takes the art team about two-three weeks to concept a character. Herman probably worked on this painting for about 3-5 days. The game’s sci-fi universe and story open us up to so many types of designs. I can push style and proportions further than I ever could before. The bounds are pretty limitless, it’s really freeing as an artist to make monsters, robots, aliens, humans, or almost anything you can dream up. I was one of the main concept artists on Borderlands 1 & 2, which I adored of course, but being the person that set the rules visually and thematically on Battleborn meant the whole thing would start from the eyes of a concept artist -- creating the playground for this art team has been my favorite project I’ve been a part of."
-Scott Kester, Battleborn art director

The Order: 1886 - "Blackwall Vista" by Martin Bergstrom

"This is one of the earliest concepts I did for The Order: 1886. It´s a vista view from the shipyard Blackwall Yard over the Thames. It took maybe 3 days or so to complete.

"I always been interested in storytelling and illustration and when the concept art scene started to grow around 10 years ago I thought it was very creative place and I got sucked in. I started hanging out in forums where artists such as Craig Mullins posted their work and that became a huge inspiration for me."
-Martin Bergstrom, Senior Concept Artst at Ready at Dawn

King's Quest - "Good Knight's Story" (top) and "Beteween a Rock and a Hard Place" (bottom) by Evan Cagle

"So the first piece, Good Knight's Story, was completed in two days (and) finished up in Photoshop (and) basically a character piece. We’ve never seen this version of Graham before and this was key to figuring out his key and personality. This is the end piece. This is the final piece of Graham. It sort of explores a soft side of him, a contemplative side. He's with his dogs and it's not the end of his life, but he's near the end. So this is a quiet moment with him for us.

"For second piece, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, was just a mind fantasy. It was really just... a third or fourth iteration into what our goblins look like. We knew that we wanted them to have an environmental quality. They needed to be able to camouflage into the background. It's an awfully worked up piece for being an exploration piece, but I was really in love with some of the textures that I really ran with it."
-Evan Cagle, Art Director for The Odd Gentlemen

"The Academy and the ESA are proud to honor these winning artists covering so many varied styles, narratives and subject matter from our interactive entertainment medium," added Martin Rae, president, Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. "I'd like to thank our diverse panel of jurists who all have a deep appreciation for the creativity that comes from video games. Great care and spirited debate went into curating the 2015 collection and we are exceedingly proud of the 18 pieces – especially our first ever sculptural piece!"

5 Surprising Details about Fallout 4

E3 2015: Dishonored 2 Announced, Featuring Emily Kaldwin

During today's Bethesda E3 conference, Bethesda Software announced an upcoming sequel to Dishonored. The empire of the Isles is in danger once more by a userper. You travel to Cornaca to assassinate targets, and you can switch between playing as Emily Kaldwin (who is supposed to be Empress by now) or Corvo. Not only does it look like Emily has the same agility as Corvo, but she bears the mark that grants her special powers. As in the previous Dishonored game, players can choose to either kill everyone in sight, or not to kill anyone - usually dooming targets to a fate worse than death. It remains to be seen what leads Emily to take up the path of the supernatural assassin.

Dishonored 2 is being developed for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Accompanying the reveal is the announcement of Dishonored Definitive Edition, which is expected to release this fall for the Xbox One and PS4. The Definitive Edition will include the main game along with all its add-on content, all with remastered content.

E3 2015: Bethesda Announces Fallout 4 Release Date of November 10, 2015

Bethesda gave Fallout fans the reveal of a lifetime as Fallout 4 was announced earlier this month. Through the power of observation, we learned we’ll be adventuring through a post-apocalyptic Boston while also speculating on what exactly we just saw in Fallout 4’s first trailer. Bethesda teased we would be learning more about Fallout 4 at E3, and today, that’s exactly what it did during its first-ever E3 conference.

First fans took to cheering as Bethesda revealed that Fallout 4's game would begin just before the dropping of the bombs. Set within the most detailed open world they've crafted yet, the game will take place within Boston 200 years after the first bombs dropped. They also revealed a new, more detailed character creation system, and an even more enhances armor system.

Bethesda also announced a special Pipboy Collector's Edition of the game which will feature a specially built Pipboy which you can then plug your smart phone into. For those who don't pick up the special edition of the game, you'll be able to download the fully working application for your Android or IOS device.

Ever played Fallout and thought 'man I wish I could rebuild all this stuff?' Well now you can. Starting in Fallout 4 players will be able to completely rebuild and decorate structures throughout the game world. Customize and construct in real time, building up your settlement with the arrival of new citizens and merchants. Craft power grids, build turrets, and defend your settlement from incoming raiders. Along with large-scale settlements, players will also be able to build items like scopes for their favorite weapon, giving new purpose to all the random junk you can find throughout the world. With these new upgrades you'll be able to upgrade your favorite weapons, and even customize your very own set of Power Armor.

Fallout 4 will release for Xbox One, PS4, and PC November 10th, 2015.

E3 2015: Doom coming to Xbox One, PS4, PC in spring 2016

Bethesda Softworks and iD Software announced they’d be revealing Doom during its first-ever E3 press conference, which has been in production since 2008. Since then, its been in developmental limbo at iD Software, but today, we were treated to a gameplay demo that was longer than the 11-second tease released last month.

The Bethesda pre-E3 press conference kicks off with Doom, which promises to take first-person shooters to an all-new level. The new game is centered around badass demons, big f'ing guns, and moving really fast. You only have one goal at this massive UAC facility on Mars: Kill lots of demons.

Moving through a darkened facility, the solider switches from using a machine gun to a super shotgun. The game looks like it will be all about making your way through narow corridors, opening doors, and discovering what horrors are waiting behind it. Supplimenting the gunfire are a number of melee moves to tear the demons apart when firepower isn't enough. Demons drop objects like ammo, which look like they can all be automatically picked up at once by walking over or near them.

The gameplay demo moves on from the shotgun to the plasma rifle, to help vaporize enemies. Players use a wheel to switch between weapons, which slows down time. Players can soften enemies up with the plasma rifle, before switching to the shotgun, then finish off a demon by tearing its head apart. There are new stealth demons to worry about, but it initiall seems indifferent to the soldier

Of course Doom is also about opening doors, and this game is no different. But instead of looking for colored keycards all over the place, the soldier pulls a hand off a corpse and uses it on the hand scanner. Finally, the demo moves to the killer chainsaw to tear through demons with ruthless efficiency. The soldier continues forward before tearing a Revanent apart with his bare hands.

We also get our first look at Doom's multiplayer, which uses unique power-ups and deadly weapons to go head-to-head. Best of all, players can assume the roles of demons to attack opponents.

We also learned the Doom will come with a robust set of mod tools called Doom Snapmap, where players can create and share custom maps and game modes. Any player, regardless of expertise, can stap together objects to create all-new maps, and modify the game logic for additional modes. Players will have access to Snapmap, regardless of platform.

The Doom presentation finishes with a trip to hell, complete with pools of blood in a rocky underground setting. You can kill a giant demon by ripping a power core from its chest and shoving it down its throat. But when all else fails, there's always the BFG.

Doom will launch Spring 2016 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

E3 2015: Battlecry Opens up Global Beta Signups

It's been over a full year since Bethesda first unveiled its team-based multiplayer game, Battlecry. But the free-to-play competitive combat game without gunpowder is still in line to hit beta later this year, so it was only natural that Bethesda would show off some more of the game at E3 2015. This marks the game's first appearance since last year's PAX Australia, when Bethesda announced that the beta would hit that region first.

Thankfully players around the world can now join in the multiplayer madness by signing up for Battlecry's Global Beta over on their official website. The latest build of the game will be playable at this year's E3 conference, and we'll be sure to share anymore details as they roll in. Today's presentation also introduced the game's newest playable group, the Han Republic.

Shacknews Spotlight: Crazy E3 Predictions

The Question: E3 is less than a week away, and that means it’s time to put all our thinking caps on and try to figure out what we’re going to see at this year’s iconic convention. What are your craziest E3 Predictions?

Steve Watts: I think even avoiding some reveals that we already know, we can make a few predictions with a fair chance of accuracy. The recent hints that Skylanders will get Amiibo support make sense. A teaser for the next Gears of War seems like a given at this point. Project Morpheus is sure to have a big presence, and it would make sense for Sony to use it to supplement to an existing franchise like Uncharted or Killzone. We've seen some reason to suspect Fallout 4 will get announced for release later this year, which would be a huge deal. And I'll bet Shigeru Miyamoto sits down for a roundtable where he spills some secrets. It happens every year!

That said, where's the fun in being reasonable? This is the time for wild predictions based more on our hopes than any kind of legitimate expectation. So in the spirit of "I wish but not likely," I'll say Microsoft reveals Rare is working on a new Viva Pinata, Nintendo announces Elite Beat Agents 2, and Sony makes a point of showing actual new games for the Vita. The debut of the PC show will put a heavy focus on the next generation of Valve's Source Engine, with a headliner like Left 4 Dead 3 to make it stand out.
But they still don't announce Half-Life 3. I mean, let's not go nuts.

Ozzie Mejia: Now that there's an actual release window for the consumer version of Oculus Rift, I think it makes sense that we'll get at least one big-time AAA franchise that will announce Oculus support. I'm wondering if Bethesda would be willing to take that shot with Doom 4. How's that for some wild speculation?

But if you want predictions that are a little more grounded and border on the obvious, then I think this is the year we finally start hearing about the new Mass Effect. I'm not sure that they'll title it "Mass Effect 4," because I think EA and Bioware want to make it clear that Commander Shepard's story is over. One way or another, though, I think it's finally time to start showing more details other than last year's passing mention.

Steve Watts: Oh yeah, Ozzie. I think it would be a huge mistake not to start talking about the next Mass Effect this year, but publishers tend to avoid any numbering past three like the plague. I'll bet it's got a subtitle to mark it as an offshoot.

Speaking of EA, we should definitely start hearing more about their Star Wars plans right about now. We know Battlefront is going to be there in a big way, but it's about time we heard about some of the other games coming from that exclusivity arrangement.

Josh Hawkins: Oh man. Crazy predictions.. alright. I'm in. So Dice is going to come up in Battlefront and reveal that all the details they've been sharing about Battlefront were lies. There will be at least 40vs40 player action and even space battles (Dice pls). Mirror's Edge 2 will get a 2015 release date (because Faith is freaking awesome and we all love her and need more of her in our lives, and why are you making me wait so long Dice?). On top of that Oculus is going to announce release at the end of 2015 instead of 2016. Also, Ozzie, Doom 4 is so going to have Oculus support. It has to. It would be perfect for it.

Also, I bet Valve announces another upcoming VR project with another big group like LG or Motorola. Or maybe they'll even side up with Oculus to create something beautiful (I can dream can't I?).

Mass Effect has to happen. It's been long enough already, but yeah. Like Ozzie said, it won't be called Mass Effect because Sheperd's tale is done. Poof. Ended. Time for a new story in the ever-growing universe, right?

Also, here's a hope, a very very naive hope... We get a Star Citizen release date
(I figure Q4 2016 or Q2-3 2017), as well as updates that actually make the game worth buying into (Don't get me wrong. It's beautiful. The ships are awesome to fly... but right now there isn't much else to do).

On Steve's topic... yeah most developers seem to avoid the numbers after 3 with extreme prejudice... unless of course you're Valve, at which point you refuse to believe that the number 3 even exists. Gaben please... give me more Gordon and Alex. Thanks.

Steven Wong: Considering the big impact the HTC Vive made at its debut, I think there will be a big battle of the headsets going on at E3. Maybe we'll see Portal VR!

Vanilla predictions include a Watch Dogs sequel, because you know it's happening. Maybe another Ghost Recon game. Ubisoft sometimes pulls out whacky and strange games like Shape Up, so I look forward to see what twisted rabbit it'll pull out of its hat this year. EA has some great reveals like Mirror's Edge 2, and whatever the Mass Effect spin-off game is going to be.

This is also going to be the year Steam Machines and SteamOS are looking to really make a big impression, so Valve is going to have to offer something that can't be found on any other console or system. Could it finally be the year we finally see a certain third chapter we've all been eagerly anticipating? Come on, Valve, release Left 4 Dead 3 already!

Other crazy and whacky E3 predictions: The next Gears of War will be cross platform playable between Windows 10 PC and Xbox One. Make it happen, Microsoft!

Another wild prediction: Rise of the Tomb Raider will release on PC alongside Xbox One.

Daniel Perez: Man - you guys already came up with some great predictions. I guess it's my fault for being busy with news and not jumping into our thread sooner.

Well -- here goes.

Some of my crazy predictions includes Nintendo announcing the New 3DS will finally release in the US since they received so much feedback about it as well as announcing the NX, but giving extremely vague details. Microsoft will offer a special deal for those who purchased Halo: The Master Chief Collection, maybe even giving those customers a free copy altogether considering the mess of a launch it had. Sony announces a new Vita, although it's pretty much the same device with minor tweaks, although I'd love it to have clickable analog sticks.

As for stuff that's more in the realm of possibility, Gears of War Remastered is announced with a beta taking place some time in 2015; Sierra Games (during Activision's conference) shows off more King's Quest and announces another classic point-and-click game for its upcoming portfolio; Capcom reveals tons of information surrounding Street Fighter 5, including the majority of its roster, and finally shows off Deep Down gameplay footage; and Valve gives us a full introduction to SteamOS by highlighting a number of its features, Steam Machines, and announcing Left 4 Dead 3, which will be PC exclusive and will offer a number of exclusives for those playing it on SteamOS.

That’s really all we managed to get out of the group this week. What are your crazy predictions? What do you hope to see out of E3? Sorry we couldn’t get a thread going up this week, but things have just been crazy as we’ve prepared ourselves for the massive week ahead. Stick with us though, and you’ll be glad you did. For everything E3 related – as Andrew and Greg would say – you’re already in the right place, you’re on Shacknews.com

Shacknews Spotlight: Crazy E3 Predictions

E3 2015: Eyes-on with StarVR and Overkill's The Walking Dead

The weekend before E3 2015 started on a very interesting note. I walked into the House of Blues on Saturday evening expecting to hear more about Overkill's The Walking Dead and possibly see something tangible. I got far more than I expected when Starbreeze revealed that not only would this game run in virtual reality, but the long-time European game publisher had manufactured its own VR headset called StarVR.

The claims sounded very impressive. Dual 5.5" Quad HD panels for 5120x1440 resolution? A 90Hz refresh rate? A 210 degree field of view? Those are specs to salivate over.

However, after trying the headset and the demo for Overkill's The Walking Dead for myself, I was more convinced that Starbreeze may have a long way to go before it can hit its lofty goals. The demo started off with some calibration issues and took a good while to adjust itself. I was seeing a lot of ghosting images and blurriness to start, especially when I turned my head.

While these issues eventually cleared up, what I saw next wasn't exactly mind-blowing. The textures in front of me were somewhat rough, reminiscent of the early VR demos that I had seen a couple of years ago. Something boasting powerful specs like StarVR needs an equally powerful showcase, but with Overkill's The Walking Dead in as early a stage as it is, that didn't quite fit the bill. Textures looked somewhat undefined, environments felt uninspired, and the actual gameplay didn't feel like the big leap forward that I was hoping to see from virtual reality.

To elaborate, the demo for Overkill's The Walking Dead saw me in the role of a paraplegic in a hospital, just as the zombie outbreak was taking place. A pair of humans helped push the wheelchair forward, clearing the way forward and keeping an eye out for walkers. At some point, they would hand me a shotgun to defend myself. In truth, it was simply an on-rails shooter. And while I love the genre, it didn't feel particularly interesting. Worse yet, for a prime horror franchise like The Walking Dead, the demo didn't feel all that scary, either.

With that said, there's still reason to be optimistic, as there's still a lot of time for development to change for the better. Prior to the demo, Starbreeze and Overkill were adamant that this demo would not be indicative of the final game and would, in fact, undergo major changes. The demo was simply used to help showcase the headset. And while it wasn't a visual marvel, the demo was made noticeably more interesting, thanks to the VR shotgun peripheral from TrinityVR. This peripheral featured full pump-action, to offer a true feel of a shotgun.

The headset likewise shows the seeds of something special, even if it didn't feel like the demo made the most of the monitors' resolution capabilities. However, StarVR does deliver on its 210 degree field of view promise, allowing me the closest I could get to peripheral vision from a VR headset.

Starbreeze is promising this same demo will be playable at E3 2015, so time will tell whether I'm simply an outlier with this opinion. First impressions mean a lot and mine are definitely mixed for StarVR. But the potential is definitely there and I'm anxious to see how Starbreeze Paris (formerly InfinitEye) can iterate on this hardware and build upon the foundation it has set.

No release date or pricing has been given for StarVR at this time. Look for more information to come in the future.

E3 2015: Super Smash Bros. adds Ryu, Roy, and lots more content starting today

Nintendo has announced a number of downloadable content as well as new features for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS that includes yesterday’s leak of Street Fighter’s Ryu and Fire Emblem’s Roy.

As we learned yesterday, both Roy and Ryu are currently available to download as well as Lucas. Pricing for both Lucas and Roy stands at $3.99 each for either the Wii U or 3DS version, while accessing them on both versions of the game will cost $4.99 each. Ryu, on the other hand, is priced at $5.99 for either version and $6.99 for both versions and comes with his stage, Suzaku Castle.

Nintendo put a little more work into Ryu and his stage than other content as he’s able to perform all of his signature special moves and has two final smashes. Players can perform his signature Hadouken with the press of a button, but if they match the original input (Down + Down/Right + Right + A), it will result in a stronger attack. The same goes for his other special moves, Shoryuken and Hurricane Kick. As for the final smashes, the Shinku Hadouken will be his default attack, although if his final smash is activate close to an opponent, he’ll perform a Shin Shoryuken.

A plethora of Mii Fighter suits are also being made available today that includes costumes from the Mega Man, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Virtua Fighter series that are available for $0.75 each on either Wii U or 3DS and $1.15 each for both versions. Here’s a list of all the costumes that are available for Mii Fighters and what specific Mii Fighter it’s available for:

  • Megaman.EXE (Gunner)
  • Zero (Swordfighter)
  • Isabelle (Gunner)
  • Inkling Boy & Inkling Girl (Gunner)
  • Squid Hat
  • Jacky (Brawler)
  • Akira (Brawler)

The classic Super Smash Bros. Nintendo 64 stage Dream Land has returned and is available for both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash Bros. Pricing for the stage is set at $1.99 for either console, $2.99 for both.

Super Smash Bros. will also support a new tournament mode in August that will feature community tourneys as well as regular tournaments that will only be available during certain times of the year. Creating YouTube clips will also be much easier as Nintendo will allow replay videos to be uploaded directly on the service from within Super Smash Bros.

Overkill Software will be bringing its The Walking Dead game to E3, but prior to the start of the show, the developer behind the Payday series has announced it will be a VR game. Not only that, but Starbreeze has emerged as an unlikely competitor in the growing VR wars, announcing that it would release its own headset, dubbed Star VR.

Starbreeze made the announcement during a special event at the House of Blues in West Hollywood. The VR headset is an ambitious piece of work, with Starbreeze noting that it would include dual 5K resolution monitors, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 210 degree field of view.

Look for more detailed impressions on Star VR, as well as Overkill's The Walking Dead, to come tomorrow.

E3 2015: Dishonored 2 allegedly leaked by Bethesda

Bethesda is scheduled to hold its first-ever E3 showcase, although it appears we were going to hear more than just additional information on Fallout 4 and Doom. Dishonored fans should pay close attention to tomorrow’s showcase as Bethesda is expected to reveal its upcoming sequel.

The leak comes from Bethesda itself as a microphone was accidentally set live to Bethesda’s Twitch channel, which picked up a discussion about Dishonored 2 being presented during tomorrow’s showcase. The conversation doesn’t include any concrete evidence that outright say Dishonored 2 will be shown tomorrow, but based on what can be heard, the words “Dishonored” and “Harvey” seem to be what was picked up.

Harvey Smith was the co-director of Dishonored and appears to be making a presentation during Bethesda’s showcase tomorrow evening. Smith moved to France following the release of Dishonored back in 2012 to work on a follow-up with Arkane Studios.

To play devil’s advocate, the word “Dishonored” doesn’t necessarily mean we’re getting a sequel this year as it could have been mentioned to remind us what Smith previously worked on. But at the same time, nearly three years seems like an appropriate amount of time for Bethesda to begin discussing its sequel, considering how popular the title was when it released.

Don't forget a possible leak for Dishonored: Definitive Edition popped up last month, although we doubt Bethesda would announce something like that during its big E3 presentation. That seems something more appropriate to be sent out in a press release some time after the show has come and gone.

E3 2015: Ryu from Street Fighter and Roy leaked for Super Smash Bros. Wii U, 3DS

Nintendo is set to make a major announcement regarding Super Smash Bros. tomorrow morning, but it appears some eagle-eyed fans of the series have discovered Street Fighter’s Ryu and Fire Emblem’s Roy will be making an appearance in both the Wii U and 3DS versions of Nintendo’s popular fighting series.

The leak comes from data miners exploiting the Japanese update for both games that was released earlier than they were supposed to. In addition to Ryu and Roy, a number of other assets were discovered including a Splatoon trophy, some new stages like DreamLand 64, and Mii costumes from the Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Mega Man, and Animal Crossing series. Ryu’s stage from Street Fighter II was also discovered.

This isn’t the first leak Nintendo has faced prior to its E3 Digital Showcase as the 3DS version of Hyrule Warrios was also leaked by Koei Tecmo earlier this week. The leak came by way of a YouTube video on Koei Tecmo’s official YouTube channel showcasing Hyrule Warriors on the 3DS, although it was taken down shortly after. These are two substantial surprises Nintendo had up its sleeve entering E3 2015, although it doesn’t deter us from being excited about these two pieces of news. We look forward to see what else the company has up its sleeves, that is, unless everything gets leaked prior to their showcase.

Chattycast 50: All Aboard the E3 Hype Train

With mere days to go before E3 starts in earnest, the crew takes a moment from packing its bags to chat about what they expect to see out of the event. And since we industry types need a studious straight man, we bring back Dr. Games as our sounding board. All that and Chatty members attempting to get us to break embargoes are just a listen away.

As always, thank to everyone who provide topics this week: Amusatron, and Hemtroll. If you want see your name in lights, keep an eye on Chatty to suggest topics! And, special thanks to Chatty user dael for contributing music to the show, and to Bryan "Doctor Games" Carr for production assistance.

  • I want you guys each to make two predictions on the 'Cast about what E3 will reveal that hasn't been announced so far. The first prediction will be based on all the information you've already got to work with and are fairly certain will come to pass. The second prediction is your longshot, the thing you're really, really hoping will happen but have no definitive information to indicate that it will.
  • Games like Assassin's Creed, The Witcher and Shadow of Mordor have you play a master swordsman regularly fighting a dozen enemies at a time but it doesn't always work as well as you'd want it to. What is the most enjoyable 1-vs-many sword fighting system you've seen in a game?

The Oculus and Microsoft Partnership: A Silly Start to a Brilliant Relationship

Oculus VR not only revealed the final consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset yesterday at its pre-E3 2015 press conference, but it also included a fair number of surprises. One of the most stunning (though some might call it disappointing) revelations is the partnership between Oculus and Microsoft. This deal means that Windows 10 will feature native Oculus Rift support, taking full advantage of DirectX 12, and the headset will ship with an Xbox One controller. Furthermore, games streamed from an Xbox One to a Windows 10 PC can use the Oculus Rift as a display for a unique experience. A demo of this functionality had a young girl playing Forza 6 using an Oculus headset, which had her inside of a virtual movie theater, so she was playing a game on a massive screen.

The virtual movie theater is super gimmicky, but it could prove to be an practical solution for those who don't have the money or the space for giant sized TV or projector setup. But, given the fact that Xbox One streaming is a feature built into Windows 10, chances are you won't necessarily need an Oculus Rift to get the same experience. You could probably use an HTC Vive, which deflates all the air from a demo that didn't have all that much to start with.

As for the Xbox One controller, it was clearly a setup for the games program, which includes titles like Edge of Nowhere and others built from the ground up to support the Oculus Rift. Additionally, it set the stage for the far more impressive Oculus Touch reveal at the end of the presentation. Although some might be disappointed that the plain Xbox One gamepad is the official controller to ship with the device, it makes sense that it would be. As stated in the presentation, it's a controller that most people are familiar with. Therefore, when you dive into these made-for-Oculus games, you can focus on the games instead of learning all-new controls.

For those that absolutely must have the Oculus Touch experience, who is to say that there won't be a premium bundle that includes it when the device ships in 2016? Not to mention, just because it ships with the controller, doesn't mean you have to use it. If you completely hate the Xbox One controller for whatever reason, you're free to use a different one, or use Lighthouse, which is not exclusive to the HTC Vive.

Furthermore, the controller ties back into the Xbox One streaming functionality. Remember, at the end of the day, all games that we know of that are releasing for the Xbox One are meant for a 2D screen. So, it makes sense to have a relevant controller to go with it. Xbox head Phil Spencer said that this was the start of a new kind of cinematic experience, which probably means doubling down on the virtual movie theater gimmick. Although this contradictory to the opening statement, where a clear line was drawn between a movie experience and a immersive virtual reality experience, but we might be able to let that go until more VR movies start releasing.

The bottom line is, those who remain fixated on the controller and the silly little virtual theater presentation could be missing the bigger picture: The Xbox One might have a VR headset.

It might be hard to gather, given the unimpressive nature of the partnership announcement, but as part of the unified vision between Windows 10 PCs and Xbox One, porting software between the two systems should be relatively easy. That might go for hardware too. What is the Xbox One if not a computer that is specially built to play games and deliver entertainment? Sony has Morpheus, which will be limited to use on the PlayStation 4. Up until yesterday, Microsoft's big show was the HoloLens, which relies on augmented reality, and won't offer the same sense of presence and immersion as a virtual reality headset. By partnering with Oculus, Microsoft can have it both ways: its own augmented reality headset, and a VR headset if the former doesn't catch on. All without having to invest in developing virtual reality technology on its own.

Maybe we can look forward to an Xbox branded VR headset, powered by Oculus, somewhere down the road. One that will plug directly into the Xbox One and use the Kinect as its controller. That's when we'll see more exciting announcements like a Forza or Halo VR Edition.

However, a headset that can be switch back and forth between a Windows 10 PC and Xbox One would be the a truly remarkable development. It could be the key to tip things in Oculus's favor when it comes to owners of both systems. Those who enjoy both console and PC gaming won't have to purchase two headsets.

That long term solution would be absolutely brilliant.
