Report: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain to include microtransactions

mercredi 10 juin 2015

Konami has had its share of problems this year, but even with the strained relationship with famed game director Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is continuing forward with a September release. However, gamers may not be pleased to hear reports surfacing around the web that the new Metal Gear will have in-game microtransactions.

The first report comes from LevelUp journalist, Jorge Arellano, who was present at a recent Metal Gear Solid V preview event run by Konami. Arellano, who goes by the Twitter handle @urovoros, discovered an error message hinting at in-game microtransactions while trying to complete an in-game task that should’ve taken a lengthy amount of time to complete. Arnello was given an option to finish the task instantly, but was unable to do so without a PSN connection. The posting by Armello was entirely in Spanish, but has been translated by Twitter user @Artemio.

Furthermore, it seems the Italian PlayStation Store only deepens our concerns. On the MGSV page, there is a note that says, “Acquisti in-game opzionali.” In English, this translates to “Optional in-game purchases.”

It is still too early to say how microtransactions will affect the game, or if Konami includes them in the final product at all. Nonetheless, Konami should tread carefully; most gamers agree microtransactions are best confined to the mobile-gaming realm. Let’s just hope if there are microtransactions, they don’t end up being a phantom pain in our asses.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is scheduled to be released September 1 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and last-gen consoles. A PC release is set to arrive September 15.
