Chattycast 49: Surgically Removed Butts

vendredi 5 juin 2015

The Chattycast returns for another week of gaming discussion and general shenanigans. Host Steve Watts returns after a week away with our Shacknews panel to discuss what they've been playing before diving into a trio of topics taken from our Chatty community.

As always, thank to everyone who provide topics this week: Milleh, Hemtroll, and David Craddock. If you want see your name in lights, keep an eye on Chatty to suggest topics! And, special thanks to Chatty user dael for contributing music to the show, and to Bryan "Doctor Games" Carr for production assistance.

  • What one game could have single handedly pushed Valve to implement their new and awesome refund policy?
  • You know how lots of video games where you're supposed to be a mega badass start you out as a level 1 nobody with shit gear and no skills? Can you suggest some games where you are a rad dude with sweet powers from the get go? Can a game even work like that without killing all the challenge right away?
  • What are some of your favorite stores have have since gone to that big warehouse in the sky? Media Play stores were essentially half a dozen self-contained stores under one roof; each section (video games, movies, books, music, etc.) was massive. The store was your one-stop shop for all entertainment-related goods. Best Buy bought them up in the early 2000s, but as a kid, I hit MP once or twice a month with friends and parents, and scored some cool stuff there before they got bought out. My dad bought me FINAL DOOM there, and I also got this CD-ROM-based interactive guide called The Ultimate Guide to Mortal Kombat. You could navigate through virtual guides for MK1-3 by clicking on characters, which listed their special moves, combos, and finishers. Beyond the games, the guide also showed interviews and making-of segments from the first MK movie (one of my not-so-guilty pleasures). It was a fun place, and I miss it. I actually love going to brick-and-mortar stores. They're uniformly overpriced, but I enjoy getting my hands on products, taking them for a sort of test drive before buying. What are some of your favorite consumer-first establishments from yesteryear?
