Bravely Second End Layer comes to 3DS in 2016

lundi 1 juin 2015

Bravely Second End Layer will be heading to North America on the 3DS family of systems in 2016, Nintendo has announced today.

Bravely Second End Layer will feature a brand-new story, a new protagonist, and won’t require players to have experienced the original game in order to play it. Although if you happened to have played Bravely Default, you’ll be able to catch up with some returning characters as well as a few additional surprised the developers have in store.

The story of Bravely Second End Layer focuses around Agnes Oblige once again as she’s been kidnapped, and it’s up to Yu Zeneolsia to rescue her. The player will be joining Yu on his grand adventure in a game where the battles are deeper than the previous title’s.

Bravely Second End Layer is the sequel to Square Enix’s popular JRPG game, Bravely Default, which released on the 3DS back in October 2012. Bravely Default sold extremely well for the publisher, which is why we weren’t completely surprised to hear a sequel was in the works.

Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure Announced for June Release

The Doctor is in. Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure brings back the classic Tetris-like gameplay with the medicinal flair to the Nintendo 3DS. In it, you have to match 4 of the same colored capsules or viruses to wipe them out. Except, this time around, antiviral medicine is getting some extra twists, including a virus buster stylus based minigame, a Dr. Luigi mode (where you only play with L shapes), and a Miracle Cure system.

Miracle Cures appear by matching capsules and filling up the gauge on the right side of the bottle. Using one can either wipe out all capsules and virus with the matching color, remove entire columns, or destroy everything within a radius. These Miracle Cures translate into in-game medicines in competitive multiplayer my interrupting the opponent's progress. Abilities include reversing controls, increasing the drop rate speed, or preventing capsule rotation. If that all sounds like a bit much, the Miracle Cure feature can always be turned off.

As an added bonus, Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure will support download play, so two players can battle each other using one cartridge. Other multiplayer modes include cooperative play, where players can work to clear viruses together.

Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure is available for pre-purchase starting today and will release on the Nintendo eShop on June 11th.

Splatoon kicks off summer of free content starting at 7PM PT today

Nintendo’s colorful new shooter has only been out for a week, but it looks like they're trying to make sure fans won't grow bored anytime soon. Starting today at 7PM PT / 10PM ET, the Wii U developer will be pushing out additional content to the Squid-based game, for free. That’s right, starting this evening Nintendo will begin its summer of free content additions to the game. The first content drop will feature a new map, called Port Mackerel, a new gun – the N-Zap ’85, and Splatoon’s Ranked Battle Mode will also unlock for all players level 10 and above, allowing them to compete in the game’s other modes.

This is a huge first step in the process of supporting an online video game, and for those who aren’t aware, Splatoon is Nintendo first big foray into the multiplayer shooter genre. So far, however, the game is looking stable, the content will continue to release, and Nintendo seems to really be dedicated to helping their Squid-based shooter stay above the surface.

Rise of the Tomb Raider gets new trailer prior to E3 2015

Microsoft has released a new trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider today that offers a glimpse of Lara Croft’s drive and motivation in this new adventure.

In Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara will visit some of the most treacherous and remote regions of the world, although she’ll have help from some of the most well-known explorers around. Her experiences in Rise of the Tomb Raider help her embrace her destiny as the Tomb Raider.

In addition to today’s trailer, Xbox and Crystal Dynamics have revealed the box art for Rise of the Tomb Raider, which you can view below the trailer.

It's still a little surreal to see Microsoft publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider as a timed exclusive, but considering how well the Tomb Raider reboot did for both Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix, we're not completely surprised. Microsoft needs more exclusives to help sell the Xbox One, and having a new Tomb Raider game as a timed exclusive should help, as long as they know how to market it.

Rock Band 4 preview: the song remains the same

There are some things that are just engrained into your brain. Riding a bike, swimming, driving, playing World 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. are just some examples of instincts that are never forgotten. For this writer, I can also add rhythm music games to that list. In particular, Rock Band is something that cannot be forgotten and that's something I learned, once again, when it came time to go hands-on with Rock Band 4.

This installment of Rock Band isn't about to blow anyone away with any particular surfeit of new features. Nor will it dazzle with its visuals, as the crowds and interface feel very much like previous Rock Band games. At this point, Rock Band is what it is. It's about getting with your friends to explore a vast music library and jam together. That atmosphere returns completely intact with Rock Band 4, along with a few other bits of good news. As Harmonix discussed during the game's initial announcement, all legacy back catalog DLC will be supported, provided they've already been purchased on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Most of my hands-on time was spent getting to reminisce with some old favorite tracks, like Boston's "More Than A Feeling," Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker," and Pearl Jam's "Evenflow." Of course, the game itself will also feature a handful of new tracks.

The six newly-revealed tracks include:

  • Avenged Sevenfold - "Hail to the King"
  • Fleetwood Mac - "You Make Loving Fun"
  • Jack White - "Lazaretto"
  • Spin Doctors - "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong"
  • The Killers - "Somebody Told Me"
  • The Who - "The Seeker"

The basic fundamentals of a Rock Band game are all present. Play notes to the tune of the music to rack up a high score and rev up the crowd. Guitar, Bass, Drums, and Vocals all return, with wireless legacy instrument support. PS3 wireless instruments can jump to PS4, just as Xbox 360 instruments can jump to Xbox One. Co-publisher Mad Catz will also be putting together whole new instruments to go along the game.

There are a couple of new minor tweaks to the overall Rock Band experience that should make playing with friends a little more of a streamlined experience. Bands can now play in "Shows," which allows the virtual audience to shout requests, demand encores, and also react to bands' song choices. A voting system will come up in-between each song, allowing bands to democratically pick which song to play next out of a number of categories. Maybe three bandmates will vote for "An 80s song" or "A long drum solo" or the like. The most interesting aspect of this feature is that it removes the precious minutes spent running through the setlist menu and keeps the music going at a decent pace.

Singers and drummers will also have some new concepts to play with. Freestyle vocals allow for some more self-expression, with Hard and Expert players able to improvise and add flourishes to a song, just as long as they're still in key. Dynamic drum fills, meanwhile, adds a new drumfill system to trigger Overdrive, allowing drummers to keep the beat as they go. Change can be rough for some, however, which is why there will be an option in place to use the legacy Rock Band 3 drum fills, as well as the "Static" drum fills used in The Beatles: Rock Band.

If there was one feeling I couldn't shake off throughout my time with Rock Band 4, it's that Harmonix understands exactly what their game is now. They're not bogged down by delusions of trying to teach people how to play real instruments. Rock Band 4 embraces what the series has always been to many people -- a game to pop in and enjoy with friends. With the Shows mode, that atmosphere feels more prevalent than before. There are still a couple of unanswered questions, such as whether the Rock Band 3 keyboard peripheral will get legacy support and the fate of wired Xbox 360 instruments. But the most crucial question of "Is this still the Rock Band people know and love?" looks to be an emphatic yes.

Rock Band 4 is set to release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year.
