Update: Shortly after publishing our story, Konami has confirmed Silent Hills has been canceled. In a statement sent to us, they say, "Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic ‘Silent Hills’ project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued."
Original Story: Over the weekend, a rather large drama bomb went off as Konami announced it would be pulling its Silent Hills teaser P.T. from the PlayStation Store this week as its distribution period will expire on April 29. This left many to speculate on the future of the actual game itself, but co-director Guillermo del Toro spoke about Silent Hills during an event in San Francisco on Saturday where photojournalist Matt Hackney quoted him as saying “It’s not gonna happen and that breaks my greasy heart.”
A video of del Toro responding to a fan question about the Silent Hills game can be seen below where he goes into more details about the project, although the sound quality is low, making it difficult to make out a lot of what he says.
Del Toro wasn’t the only person to unofficially confirm Silent Hills is no longer in development as Norman Reedus tweeted “Super bummed about this was really looking forward to it. Hopefully it'll come back around. Sorry everyone” over the weekend.
Konami has responded by releasing a brief Q&A on Silent HIlls apparent cancellation. The Q&A says Konami will continue to develop the series, although it makes no mention of whether or not Silent Hills specifically has been canceled. The document also mentions Norman Reedus’ disappearance from Silent Hills official website due to Konami’s contract period with the actor expiring, but as of this writing, his image is still up, although we assume that may change later on in the day.
Ever since it was reported Hideo Kojima would leave Konami after the release of Metal Gear Solid 5, Konami has seemed very distant with Kojima and his projects. Kojima was expected to co-direct Silent Hills along with Guillermo del Toro, but now that the latter has confirmed he’s no longer working on the project, we have a feeling it’ll only be a matter of time until Konami also confirms the game has been swept under the rug. It's definitely a shame if Silent Hills does end up canceled as it was looking more and more interesting with each reveal.
