Capcom Discusses Resident Evil Revelation 2 On Nvidia Shield

mercredi 18 mars 2015

Set between the events of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil Revelations 2 features classic characters like Claire Redfield and Barry Burton in a brand new story that unfolds episodically. The survival horror offers a cooperative twist, as only one of the two characters can use a gun, requiring teamwork as the second player must utilize stealth and weapons like crowbars and bricks to stay alive.

In addition to being available on PC and consoles, Capcom revealed the new game will be a launch title for the new Nvidia Shield device’s Grid streaming game service. Capcom Producer Michiteru Okabe discusses the power of mobile technology and explains why he's bringing Resident Evil Revelations 2 to Nvidia Shield in this exclusive interview from GDC 2015.

What were your goals were heading into Resident Evil Revelations 2?

The goals we established for Resident Evil Revelations 2 were to take Resident Evil and bring back the classic gameplay that it was known for. And then the other thing that we wanted to do was take it and turn it into episodic content. By releasing the game episodically that gives fans more choice. If they want they can go ahead and try out the first episode for $5.99 and see how they like the game. At that point if they want, they can buy more.

What did the episodic release open up for fans?

We mimicked TV by releasing an episode once a week so that we could implement cliffhangers and get people really excited about the content. People who play it weekly can talk with friends and theorize about what’s going on. So we’re really excited about that. While we’ve divided it into different episodes, we also decided that we wanted to give people the option to go ahead and get it all at once. So if they want they can buy the complete season for $24.99 and get all the episodes digitally, or they can buy a disk. We’re actually going to release a disk with the last episode and that way they can play all the content at once. And just as with anybody that buys it digitally, they can enjoy Rave mode, which is something that we’ve put a lot of effort into this time. We actually have a separate Rave mode because we really wanted to make it something that people would really enjoy this whole arcade action that Capcom is known for.

How does the story differ in this game?

We wanted to write a different kind of story this time around. A lot of times our Resident Evil games focus on these big corporations, so we thought it would be great then if we wrote a more personal story this time. You don’t have to know all of the lore in Resident Evil to enjoy the story this time around.

What are your thoughts about the NVIDIA Shield device?

We’re so excited because we have this great opportunity with the device, where not only we’re providing downloadable games at a quality that we’ve had with console titles up until recently, but we can also stream games. With the streaming functionality we’re going to be able to deliver the latest hottest games at the highest performance possible, which is really exciting for us. With Revelations 2, we wanted to give people choice of how they wanted to play the game, so we’re really excited that this is another way to expand the market and to give people more choice in how they can play. They can play it now on this device. They can play it on the streaming service.

What impact do you feel the sheer amount of TVs out there that can connect to an Nvidia Shield will have on your games?

We think that that’s going to be one of the great points of the system, the possibility to bring more people in. Everybody that watches Netflix has the potential to play Resident Evil now, so we think it will be great if they get that option. We try to write the story in a way that you don’t have to know all of the different lore in Resident Evil, so that works great with the audience the Shield can reach.

How easy is it as a developer to be able to bring a game over to Nvidia Shield?

For us it’s simple. All we have to do is have a PC version and then the service is ready to stream, so it’s really exciting for us because it’s so easy on our part.

What are your thoughts on how quickly the mobile video game industry is improving with processing power?

It’s incredible. It’s exciting because our goal is to provide our content on as many platforms as possible to give people that opportunity and choice to play it. With Nvidia Shield able to implement and actually deliver the most high-end experiences. We can’t wait for people to try it.
